THE DAZZLING BENEFITS
OF BUYING PRE-OWNED JEWELRY

Buying pre-owned fine and designer jewelry is a brilliant way to fill up your jewelry box with high-quality, desirable pieces at a more than affordable cost!

While CANARY offers new and pre-owned jewelry for sale, we do get a lot of questions about buying pre-owned, consigned jewelry. We're so glad you asked!

The short answer to the majority of the questions we receive is that buying new and pre-owned jewelry both have their own unique benefits. However, in general, when it comes to purchasing high-quality, high-cost fine jewelry (jewelry made from precious metals such as solid gold, silver, or platinum and/or that incorporates precious gemstones such as diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds and pearls), or in-demand designer jewelry, there are significant benefits to be enjoyed by purchasing such items second-hand.

BETTER BLING FOR THE BUCK

You'll get more value for your dollar when purchasing pre-owned fine or designer jewelry than if you were to spend the same amount on a same or similar brand-new item, including higher quality gems (type, cut, colour, clarity, carat size), precious metal settings, and level of craftsmanship.

DESIGNER JEWELRY IS MORE AFFORDABLE

Buying pre-owned jewelry makes owning a piece created by your favourite in-demand designer more easily within reach. We've all had our eye on a designer treasure at some point in time...and with the savings you'll enjoy by buying pre-owned you can afford to stop eyeing and start owning!

A general rule-of-thumb is that buying pre-owned jewelry results in a savings of ~25% - 50% off the
original retail and/or appraisal cost depending on demand and availability in the resale market.

AVOID PAYING FOR IMMEDIATE DEPRECIATION

All pre-owned jewelry is considered "used" even if never worn. Why? The business costs incurred in selling a new item (resourcing, purchasing, percentage of store lease & employee wages, marketing, etc.), and the profit markup (based on retailer brand recognition, item designer/brand/style demand, etc.), inflate the price and can only be recuperated once.

PRE-OWNED JEWELRY HOLDS ITS VALUE

If you purchase a piece of pre-owned fine or designer jewelry and decide to sell it in the future, you can likely sell it for close to the cost you paid. While new jewelry loses much of its value immediately after purchase, when you buy the same or similar item second-hand it's less likely to depreciate much further if properly cared for and professionally maintained.

When buying pre-owned jewelry make sure to purchase from a reputable source that includes, or can include
for a marginal fee, a professional gemologist review to ensure quality and structural integrity.

At CANARY, we only accept pre-owned jewelry that is in fabulous condition. Every pre-owned item we represent goes through a rigorous approval process to ensure authenticity, that gemstones, settings and hardware are intact, and that all components are in working order. As well, we have a partnership with the highly reputable International Gemological Laboratories (IGL) who review the pre-owned jewelry that CANARY offers for sale. In addition, all items priced at $5,000 and above come with a certified appraisal. For items priced at less than $5000, we'd be happy to arrange for a certified appraisal prior to purchase.
